seiyuu: midorikawa hikaru

Name: Midorikawa Hikaru
Date of Birth: May 2, 1968
Birth Place: Ohtawara, Tochigi, Japan
Blood Type: B

Midorikawa Hikaru, one of the most well known Japanese seiyuu (voice actor) to anime fans in North America, provides the voice to Zelgadiss in the anime, Slayers Premium movie and in the drama CDs. He has the perfect tone that, in my opinion, represents Zelgadiss' attitude very well. He manages to portray Zelgadiss' emotions excellently, without straying from the cool, withdrawn, neutral attitude that his character is supposed to have.

seiyuu: daniel cronin

Daniel Cronin was the man who provided the voice of Zelgadiss in the English dub from episodes two through ten. He provided Zelgadiss with a very quiet voice that I found to be very suitable for the character. Unfortunately, his acting made Zelgadiss appear to have no other emotion aside from angst. Zel is supposed to be a troubled man, but he's not a robot! ^^; I'm not entirely clear as to why he was replaced after episode ten, but I believe it was due to conflicts with the rest of the staff. As far as I'm aware, Daniel Cronin had no other voice acting roles before or after his brief role as Zelgadiss.

seiyuu: crispin freeman

Crispin Freeman replaced Daniel Cronin from episode 18 and onward (keeping in mind that Zelgadiss makes no appearance from episode 11 through 17), and continued to return to the role when Slayers Premium was to be dubbed for a North American release and when FUNimation decided to purchase the license to the series in order to touch it up for a new release. Personally, while I love Crispin Freeman's work as a voice actor, I never truly loved his performance as Zelgadiss. Zel is the type that doesn't want to stand out because he's self-conscious about his appearance, and therefore has a quieter nature... so I find the louder, more boisterous voice that Crispin Freeman provides doesn't exactly go with the character very well. Of course, that's just my opinion and I admire his dedication to the role. It really wouldn't be the same without him in the dub. ^^ Like Midorikawa Hikaru, however, Crispin Freeman is one of North America's most appreciated and well known voice actors.
